I'm so sorry that I forgot to update on Friday! The PD was so busy that the time got away from me. Now I'm going to try to provide an update without any of the information I need, because it's all in my classroom.

I hope you're enjoying the most interesting weather we are having.

Update:

This week we had great conversations about what matters to the families in our classes during the upcoming Federal Election. There were some significant trends towards the economy and the climate, primarily. How to balance the needs of the country is a topic we will continue to explore. Students will participate in "Student Vote" the day before the election.

We also practiced presenting in a style that is more conversational and less stilted when sharing information with our classmates. I saw excellent progress in students' ability to summarize key information while maintaining eye contact with the class.

Next Week:

Monday: Picture Day - yes, you have to wear uniform.
Tuesday: Orange Shirt Day - a day we commemorate thousands of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit children who were forced to attend Residential Schools.
Wednesday: Outdoor science field study during science class only (half day)

Update We spent a great deal of time working on developing writing that is more interesting for readers. The first written assignment, "The Backstory of the Lottery" was submitted on Friday. The reason we used this particular short story is to look at what are the actions/events/interactions that create a change in society. This is tied to our study of the Renaissance, and the factors that prompted this particular era. We've begun investigating worldview (values and beliefs) of society. We did a comparison of the Western and Aboriginal worldviews and how our own worldviews can be diverse, yet still make up a functioning society. University of Calgary University of Calgary is hosting an event called Go ENG Girl on  Saturday October 19 , from 9:30 am to noon. Update Renaissance Faire presentations were completed this week. So much learning about the various elements of the Renaissance! Next week is the Faire. Please make sure you have all your display and costume materials in on Monday. We will work on, and finalize, displays and costumes on Monday and Tuesday. Narrative Writing - please complete your Freytag's pyramid for your short story outline. We will have meetings next week about your storyline. Thank you so very much to everyone who has handed in their field study forms. The return rate has much improved compared to the start of the year.
