After a week of very cold weather, this week was full of heated discussions. We finished off our study of the Renaissance and one of our discussion topics related to expansionism - debates ensued.

Japan is our next area of study in terms of developing worldview. To launch our exploration, students developed their own island and identified worldviews and emblems which represented their values and beliefs collectively - debates ensued.

We read a short story called, "The Landlady" and students outline the story pyramid - further debates ensued.

Needless to say, it has been a lively week here in Room 104!

Next Week:

Monday - ensure you've read the chapters for your Japan novel study (Nightingale: 1-3, Chrysanthemum: 1-4, Puppeteer: 1-3)
Thursday - Report Cards go home
Friday - PD Day (no school for students)

Update We spent a great deal of time working on developing writing that is more interesting for readers. The first written assignment, "The Backstory of the Lottery" was submitted on Friday. The reason we used this particular short story is to look at what are the actions/events/interactions that create a change in society. This is tied to our study of the Renaissance, and the factors that prompted this particular era. We've begun investigating worldview (values and beliefs) of society. We did a comparison of the Western and Aboriginal worldviews and how our own worldviews can be diverse, yet still make up a functioning society. University of Calgary University of Calgary is hosting an event called Go ENG Girl on  Saturday October 19 , from 9:30 am to noon. It is an opportunity for Grade 7-10 girls and their parents to learn about engineering and try their hands at various activities, such as soldering. It is a free event but requires registration. Update Renaissance Faire presentations were completed this week. So much learning about the various elements of the Renaissance! Next week is the Faire. Please make sure you have all your display and costume materials in on Monday. We will work on, and finalize, displays and costumes on Monday and Tuesday. Narrative Writing - please complete your Freytag's pyramid for your short story outline. We will have meetings next week about your storyline.
